"For each word that you get right, we donate 10 grains of rice through the United Nations to help end world hunger." This is the stance taken by FreeRice, the sister site of Poverty.com. Started on October 7,2007, the site has donated over 330 million grains of rice. When you visit the site, you’re given a word, usually a very sophisticated one that you may not know off the top of your head, and all you have to do is guess the correct definition. Yup, that’s seriously it. Now signup’s, no donations. Just guess the correct definition.
I think it’s a great way to get people to contribute to the welfare of the world! People can be very lazy these days, and sometimes, you’re not in a position to give financially. FreeRice solves those problems. It’s really easy and you can always keep open an extra tab or window for word assistance ;) .
Today I helped donate 210 grains of rice. That’s 2 small bowls of rice. I’m going to make it my mission to donate 20 bowls of rice a month for the rest of the year. That’s 20,000 grains of rice a month. Is anyone else willing to participate? I’m going to put up a text widget in the sidebar to keep track of how much I’ve donated. This is going to be awesomesauce!
