As early adopters of new technology, we have lots of choices for communicating; most people are mostly doing email and maybe IM. Indeed, there are some uses of email (time shifting convos, communicating with groups, setting appts, etc) that make it easy. But I agree that apps like Twitter and various forums allow for more of a community feel to the conversation - and therefore are more appealing. Less as a communication between people, and more as a notification device when someone replies back to you via the other types of communications.
