ReadBurner Launches With Google Reader Integration!

Posted by Corvida On April - 15 - 2008

readburner The ReadBurner web app and Google Reader Shared Items Aggregator (here’s mine), has launched with a bang! Here’s a run down of what’s new and why it’s awesomesauce approved!

New Design

ReadBurner has a brand new design that is 10 times better then it’s previous interface. First off, I think the color scheme is stunning! It really brings the best content to your attention first. So kudos to the design team of ReadBurner for their awesome efforts!

GOOGLE READER INTEGRATION!

This has to be the biggest feature that ReadBurner has released today: Google Reader RSS feed reader is now integrated directly into ReadBurner! Feed your GReader addiction right from ReadBurner! No sense in having two tabs open now (unless you need more space). Then again, I didn’t have a problem at all with the spacing at all and haven’t gotten a horizontal scrollbar yet!

Enough said, but you should definitely read the rest of this post.

Sections

ReadBurner-sections

ReadBurner now breaks down the items into sections. The categorization of each item is pretty accurate, though you may experience a few hiccups here and there. This is a great addition for those who go to the website looking for a specific niche of items. Even more, it’s essential since a search feature has yet to be implemented (see more search below).

Disqus Integration

Disqus, an awesomesauce social commenting system and web service that you should be using, has also been integrated into ReadBurner! If you click on the "view item" button, you’ll be taken to an item’s page that will feature comments made by users of ReadBurner. Yes I know, more conversation fragmentation, but Ostrow has assured me that they are working with the Disqus team and looking into finding ways to push these comments back to the item’s original page. I suggest you start installing Disqus on your blogs now!

Author and Source Pages

I love the author and source pages! On these pages you can see a run down of the items that have been shared coming from each individual author and their respective source.

What I love the most about these pages is that you can view related items for each individual item (if found). It’s a great way to see other opinions on an item that you happened to enjoy. There’s also a handy link off to the far right to visit an author or site’s link!

Popular This Week

readburner-popularOff to the far right is a "Popular This Week" box. Here, you’ll see items that were shared the most through Google Reader this week. Keep an eye on this box because there are plans to have it change to reflect which items are the most popular this week for each section that you are browsing through and possibly each source and author page.

What’s Missing?

Question One of the most important features ever is missing from ReadBurner: Search. There’s no way to search for anything. Why it’s missing? Who knows, but I’m guessing it’s due to time constraints. After speaking with Adam Ostrow, one of the new owners of ReadBurner, he has stated that this feature is in fact on the to-do list for future ReadBurner integrations.

Another missing feature I’m looking forward to is Tags! Where are the Tags guys?!

Readburner-feedwizThere’s also no way to change the display for items like in version 1 of ReadBurner. For example, there’s no list view or visual view anymore. Everything is partially expanded, which I’m partially prone to not liking. It takes up too much space (personally) and I like to read things based on headlines, not necessarily the first few lines of an article, which never really say anything to me.

Also missing from version 1 is the RSS feed wizard (see picture to the right). This this little widget I manipulated what what items were shown based on how many items you wanted to see and how many people needed to share it. Please bring it back guys!

Awesomesauce Badge

Nevertheless, there are many more features and enhancements that propel ReadBurner into the Awesomesauce Approved stratosphere, so I’d advise you to head over there and give it a twirl!

My Journey To Joining Mixx

Posted by Corvida On April - 14 - 2008

mixx For the past week, I’ve been debating whether or not to join Mixx, a social bookmarking and news site similar to Digg. These sites take a lot of work and I don’t like joining sites that I don’t plan to participate in, otherwise, what’s the point? Thanks to Sarah Perez’s article "Why "Add To Mixx" is on My Site Now", for planting the seed that sparked the curiosity that started this journey. Here’s a look at how I came to my decision on whether or not to join Mixx.

No Digging For Me

thumbsdown Sure, my articles are sometimes "dugg" on Digg, but Digg doesn’t send me an immense amount of visitors and I’m well aware of the quirks involving Digg bringing a site visitors. However, with all the recent changes to Digg and the way it now operates, I have no desire to participate on Digg. It seems rather confusing and too much work just to help an article make it to the top.

About Other Alternatives

Question To be honest, all the other alternatives seem to be dominated by a handful of people or they simply don’t cater to the Social Media niche. I paid close attention to this because one of the reasons I wanted to join Mixx is because it catered to everyone and didn’t appear to be dominated by a handful of people. If you look at Sphinn’s homepage, you’ll see that 90% of the articles that make the front page are controlled by some of the same names. Where’s the fun in that?

Researching Mixx Using StumbleUpon Web Service

Stumbleupon Before joining Mixx I decided to do some serious research. I wanted to know if it would be worth the effort. I need to know the pros and cons of the site and the overall atmosphere of the users of Mixx. I’ve only heard good things about Mixx users, so that was already a brownie point for Mixx. However, I decided to take it a step further and instead of asking or even "tweeting" on Twitter whether or not I should join, I figured I’d do the research myself using the StumbleUpon toolbar.

To find articles on Mixx that were "stumbled" by others, I used the ‘Search’ feature on the StumbleUpon toolbar. This is located in the ‘Channel’ section of the toolbar, where you would normally see ‘All’. Clicking on ‘All’ will open a drop-down menu, where you can find the ‘Search’ feature. Once you click ‘Search’ and small box will pop-up asking for your keyword(s). Here, I typed in ‘Mixx’ and proceeded to ’stumble’.

linkriver There was a host of articles that I ran across. I used LinkRiver’s ‘Save It For Later’ feature (see LinkRiver Is My Personal Techmeme for more) to conveniently bookmark all the articles that helped me come to my decision. Here’s a link to those articles:

So Far So Good!

awesomesauceapproved After going through these articles, and bits and pieces of a few others, I was ready to commit to Mixx and I love it! I found a few of my friends who are already on there and have already begun submitting articles from yesterday and today. I’ve also joined a few groups that relate to the niches that I’m exploring and that I can be an active participant in. The atmosphere has been what I expected and what I’ve heard: smart, but reserved.

If you’re on Mixx, don’t hesitate to add me (Corvida On Mixx). You’re more than welcome to send an article my way. However, I’m warning you that I don’t do link exchanges.

FriendfeedWatch: Your One Stop FriendFeed Shop

Posted by Corvida On April - 3 - 2008

friendfeed_logoFriendfeedWatch was recently started by the awesomesauce Steven Hodson of WinExtra in an attempt to "bring everything to do with FriendFeed to one handy place."Well, I’d call this attempt a success already because I’m religiously watching this site (subscribe to it here)! It’s being Awesomesauce Approved.

At FriendfeedWatch, you can find a host of news on not only FriendFeed site updates and changes, but also links and news to the multitude of FriendFeed applications that are being released!

LiveBlogList for Friendfeed

For example, through FriendfeedWatch, I found out about the LiveBlogList for FriendFeed web app. Through LiveBlogList, you can find other people who have also shared a particular item that you shared too. You’ll receive a list of links to profiles of "People That You Will Like" and "Posted Items You Will Like". All you have to do is type in a url and LiveBlogList will do the rest. I typed in my old domain url and got this:

LiveBlogList for FriendFeed

Maybe they should change that to "People I MIGHT Like". Do you notice anyone there who I won’t like? Obviously this needs a little more work, since I’m listed several times as someone that I may like. Even though it may not know it’s me, what’s the point in pointing me out so many times? Nevertheless, I did get some great article recommendations! This web app is also awesomesauce approved!

Save For Later In FriendFeed

I’ve also been informed of another script that has been released that allows you to bookmark a post on Friendfeed for later. Some wonderful things are being made for Friendfeed! Now go keep up with them at FriendfeedWatch!

Here’s the first in my series of "Awesomesauce Approved" sites and people to come! Congrats cranky old fart!
