I’ve always shied away from writing about race because I wanted to be recognized for my passion instead of my skin color or where I come from. That’s become completely unavoidable now. Race has moved to the forefront of what’s become one of the most important topics about the future of technology: inclusion.
I like to think of myself as a Hurricane veteran. Growing up in Miami – hurricane capital of the US – I slept through a lot of hurricanes, including Hurricane Andrew. So, when Hurricane Sandy planned a trip to NYC I rolled my eyes – until I heard that Sandy would bring friends.
After diligently preparing to be without power for at least a week, I waited for Sandy. When it became risky to watch from a window, I turned to the internet. Using a collection of sites and digital tools, I was able to get an amazing bird’s-eye and ground view of Hurricane Sandy. These sites are helpful resources for anyone affected by a storm and for support volunteers looking for ways to help.
For me, these sites were especially useful for staying aware of the state of the NYC and New Jersey after Sandy hit. These tools can and should be used in any emergency whether local, national, or international.
Last November, I switched from an iPhone 4 to the Galaxy Note 2. I hate to say it, but the iPhone just doesn’t keep up with my needs anymore. It’s disappointing, but after years of waiting for Apple to bring new innovations to iOS, Google and its partners are slowly edging past Apple to meet consumer needs – and I’m moving with them.
The holiday season is in full effect and lots of people are expecting to receive the gadget of their dreams this year. This might be the sophisticated iPhone 5 or the stylish Galaxy S3. If the newer models are too big for your budget, consider going with an older model like Virgin Mobile’s Galaxy S2. You’ll be surprised at how well it compares to the competition.

There’s also a nice review posted on The Verge. Once an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6 is released, I might upgrade my iPhone 4. Until then, I’ll be enjoying Google Maps on one of these Android devices.
