googlechromelogo Today, Techmeme was probably the last site you wanted to visit if you weren’t interested in the latest Google news. The popular news meme was full of links about Google’s latest entrance in to the browser wars with Chrome. You can read plenty of information about Google Chrome on ReadWriteWeb and in the ReadWriteWeb FriendFeed room.

Failure to Integrate Services

brake failure I’m not here to give you a rundown though. I’ve already tweeted that I feel the browser is a half-baked: something to look out for, but not really worth it right now. The biggest reason why is because the integration of Google’s own service offerings sucked donkey balls! For a company that is well known for its integrations with its other service, they really failed with Chrome, which should’ve had the best integration offerings ever!

For example, I typed in an address in the bar thinking Google would at least have the brains to implement their Google Maps service. Nope! Instead it took me to Google’s search page. There wasn’t even an option to lookup the address via Google maps from the address bar’s drop-down menu. WTF?

Another point of contest is something that I find to be awfully weird. I noted in the ReadWriteWeb FriendFeed room that Google offers different right-click context menu’s depending on what you’re right clicking on. This feature was implemented into Google Maps, but there could’ve been more. It’s such a standard menu: zoom in and out, etc. There’s plenty that’s missing such as emailing the map via Gmail or adding it to a Google Calendar event as a location.

Ubiquity Does It And Does It Real Good

Firefox’s Ubiquity does a better job of integrating Google’s service such as Gmail and Youtube, better than Google does, which we can all say is a damn shame. Google could’ve really scored one for the home team with such an offering. Instead, we’ll have to wait until the next update or two to see this happen if they even bother.

By then Google, I’m afraid I’ll love Ubiquity a little too much to come back to you.

Wordpress On The iPhone Needs Improvement

Posted by Corvida On July - 22 - 2008

Just wanted to provide you with an update that the WordPress app for the iPhone is now available in the iTunes app store.

I’m typing up this post using the app now. My biggest complaint thus far is that I can’t type up a post in landscape mode. If you have an iPhone you’re aware that it’s much easier to type on the virtual keyboard in landscape mode. You can’t switch to this mode with the wordpress app.

Another qualm that I have with the app is that images are attached at the bottom of the post. So you cannot write around images and formatting just isn’t an option unless you feel like manually inserting code. You also have to manually type in links which you won’t ever see me do. Copy and paste on the iphone would’ve been very handy for this.

All in all, I would only use this for breaking news. You can add images from your library or take a snapshot right from your camera. As a tip, if you’d like to grab a screenshot from the web or from an app simply hold the home button and press the power button at the same time and an image of whatever is on your screen will be automagically saved. You can also hold your finger on an image from a website to save it to your iPhone.

This app still needs work such as a possible plugin to grab a link or a separate browser like Twitterrific to browse to the page you’d like to link to and insert the link. Still, it’s nice to have this as an option for quick on-the-go posting.

Apparently, fellow Grand Effect blogger Martin from GHacks shares my sentiments for the WordPress iPhone app: “Wordpress For iPhone Is Not A Killer App”

Yahoo! oneSearch With Voice For BlackBerries

Posted by Corvida On April - 8 - 2008

Yahoo has quite a few mobile applications that will be released in the upcoming months. The one that I’m particularly excited about is Yahoo! oneConnect. However, CNet has released a video from CTIA in Las Vegas that showcases the new Yahoo oneSearch with voice, currently only available for Blackberry Pearl, Curve, and 8800 series.

Yahoo! oneSearch with Voice

Yahoo! oneSearch is a mobile program in the ranks of Windows Live Search (which I fanatically use on my Motorola Q9m) and Google Maps Mobile. So basically, it’s a mobile search program for finding things.

Aside from a beautiful interface, the one feature that I’m loving about this application is that the voice function learns and adapts to your voice through a built in feedback system. "The more you use it, the smarter it gets."

I think it’s amazing what type of technology is being put out relating to voice and the mobile industry. I’m wondering if keyboards will even be necessary in a few decades. Nevertheless, I’m still cranky about that fact that the Windows Mobile OS doesn’t get more of these mobile applications, being that it is one of the largest mobile OS’s out there.

If you’re using Yahoo! oneSearch what are your thoughts and reviews of the application?
