Chris,

Exactly, as I said, just with anything it gets absorbed in to the public psyche and we then move on leaving it just as another tool at our disposal. The difference is that for the first time we have the ability to influence the direction it takes.

Mainstream is perhaps the wrong word but it is one people understand. I am thinking of the time when social/open/new media is everywhere and we no longer think of it as special - it's just another choice. The question is, how can we help it get there.

I'm planning a follow up on this at the normal blog.

You've used "mainstream" a lot, I don't even know what that means, really?

Social Media is an ineffective term in my mind, I am starting to prefer "open communication", and I think it may just always be a part of a larger part of communication, never THE only way, just a branch.

You can already see the BBC and various other more traditional comms companies using it in that way.

Complete social comms is akin to open source, I can't imagine the crowd designing a mercedes car engine, who owns the copyright then, who reaps the rewards?

Don't get me wrong it has it's place, I've been social as a business since 2000, but it's not the holy grail either.

No, we are not there yet, but for me, it's getting close. Social media just doesn't fit – (think BBSs CB radios)…we'll have to wait and see.
